Dr. Zarychanski is a Critical Care physician, Hematologist, and Clinician-Scientist at the University of Manitoba and Cancercare Manitoba. His research focuses on the hematologic aspects of critical illness. His major program of research is studying unfractionated heparin in septic shock – a program that has now culminated into an international randomized controlled trial. Other research programs evaluate the use of IVIG in septic shock, the prognostic value of white cell and platelet trajectories in septic shock and ability of tranexamic acid to reduce red cell transfusion in major non-cardiac surgery. Dr. Zarychanski has received over $30M in peer review grant funding. He currently holds salary and operating grant support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. Presenting, with the Province of Manitoba, he is leading a large team grant to create a provincial wide integrated clinical data platform that will link all clinical data in real time to increase research capacity and opportunities, reduce the cost clinical research, and monitor healthcare use, drug prescribing, and patient-safety
